FIBA Under 16 Women European Challengers Group E: Heartbreak for Malta following two, very close losses in Tbilisi.

The Malta under 16 women squad took part in the games from Group E of the 2021 FIBA Under 16 Women European Challengers. This group, composed of five teams was played in Tbilisi, Georgia.

After an encouraging strong start against Georgia, Malta suffered a heartbreak in the final two games as two, marginal losses in two games, which could have easily swayed either end, against Albania and Armenia meant that Malta ended just out of the medals zone.

Malta opened with a strong, convincing win over the hosts on the opening day

Malta – Georgia 71-28 (22-3, 15-12, 20-3, 14-10)

On the second day, Malta faced the strong North Macedonia side (which went on to top Group E at the end of the week)

Malta – North Macedonia 53-91 (16-18, 9-28, 9-20, 19-25)

Albania were the next opponents for the Maltese young ladies. A tight match ensued, only to be decided in the latter stages of the game.

Malta – Albania 51-53 (13-13, 16-14, 10-11, 12-15)

The final day had Malta face Armenia. All went down to the final wire and final possession with Malta again ending up on the losing end with a marginal margin.

Malta – Armenia 50-51 (14-14, 11-13, 9-10, 16-14)

The final claasification of Group E
